A Musical Sensation: My thoughts on Schmigadoon

Courtesy of The Movie Database

As soon as I first heard about Schmigadoon, I knew it was going to be the perfect show for me. I love Broadway musicals and comedy. The combination is a dream come true! I had high hopes for this show to live up to the expectations I set for it....and it did!

There is so much that I love about Schmigadoon, so I will just make a list:

* One of the main characters is named Melissa. That almost never happens in a show, movie, book, etc. I also love how one of the supporting characters says it. You'll know what I mean as soon as you hear it said a certain way....

* It has so many different tropes from old-time musicals, including characters, plots, song styles, etc.

* It has an ongoing inside joke in the form of Pete, who is always getting injured. I also love the little boy announcing everything.

* It has a star studded cast featuring: Keegan-Michael Key, Cecily Strong, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Fred Armisen, Dove Cameron, Ariana DeBose, Ann Harada, Martin Short, Jaime Camil, Jane Krakowski, etc.

* The songs! They are so much fun and many of them are hilarious. I especially love the parody of "Do Re Mi". I also enjoyed "You Can't Tame Me," "I Always, Always, Never Get My Man", "He's a Queer One, That Man o' Mine," etc.

* It reminds me a bit of Pleasantville with some aspects of Waiting for Guffman mixed in.

* There are some really sweet moments and one in particular got me teary-eyed.

* The main characters, supporting characters, and ensemble work really well together.

* The set is completely adorable and adds to the whimsical feel of the show.

* I feel the need to say it again...it's hilarious! The comedy is spot on.

* There's room for a second season, so I hope that will happen! It would be interesting if they had a different musical era for season two, like Andrew Lloyd Webber or Stephen Sondheim style...

The Guilty Reader Book Tag

I saw this tag on Book Coffee Happy and it looked like a lot of fun. I'm also realizing that I'm not as nice of a reader as I thought...

Please feel free to participate over at your blog, if you'd like. I'd love to see your answers!

HAVE YOU EVER REGIFTED A BOOK YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Only when I already have a copy of the book.

HAVE YOU EVER SAID YOU’VE READ A BOOK WHEN YOU HAVEN’T?

No. What's the point? If I saw the movie instead of reading the book, I'll admit it. I'm not George Costanza.

HAVE YOU EVER BORROWED A BOOK AND NOT RETURNED IT?

Guilty as charged. Usually it's because the person never asked for it back, even if I have the intention of doing so at some point. And yes, it has been done to me many times and I'm so bad at keeping track of my books that it doesn't bother me.

HAVE YOU EVER READ A SERIES OUT OF ORDER?

I probably have. Sometimes books are loosely placed in a series, like they are standalones but have mentions of characters from previous novels. I read this one Bette Lee Crosby book earlier this year and realized that it came after another book that I hadn't read. That also happened with a Debbie Macomber book a while back.

HAVE YOU EVER SPOILED A BOOK FOR SOMEONE?

I try hard not to do it, but one time someone asked a question on Twitter and I answered honestly since it was about an older book that was somewhat more obscure. However, my friend saw my tweet and then went and read the question and called me out on spoiling it. I did reply that if they didn't want to know what the tweet was about, they didn't have to go and read the question. I've had some books spoiled for me when I wasn't being careful about avoiding the spoilers too.

HAVE YOU EVER DOG EARED A BOOK?

I maybe did as a kid. Like when I was marking pages of steamy scenes in V.C. Andrews books. I dog ear magazines but I always use a bookmark for books.

HAVE YOU EVER TOLD SOMEONE YOU DON’T OWN A BOOK WHEN YOU DO?

Maybe... **Guilty grin.** Then again, I sometimes forget what books I actually have. Sometimes I've said I own a book when I don't anymore. I also have a lot of books on Kindle, which is harder to loan out anyway.

HAVE YOU EVER TOLD SOMEONE YOU HAVEN’T READ A BOOK WHEN YOU HAVE?

Again, what's the point in this? Unless it's a really embarrassing book or something...

HAVE YOU EVER SKIPPED A CHAPTER OR A SECTION OF A BOOK?

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult starts out really slow with all this Egyptology background and if I had to keep reading that, I would have quit the book. Someone told me to skip over that part and I did and then the book was much better.

HAVE YOU EVER BAD MOUTHED A BOOK YOU ACTUALLY LIKED?

No, since there are enough haters out there to do it for me. :( I sometimes will go easier on a book that I didn't like, but I won't recommend the book either.
