We've reached story #52! Thanks for making this a great year of getting to know people in a new way. :) If you're an avid chick lit reader and have been following Chick Lit Central, we're going to be spotlighting readers over there next year. Contact me to get the ball rolling, if you're interested.
My final storyteller is an author who has been featured at CLC before. I didn't get to personally interview her there, so I've enjoyed the chance to get to know her this way. Her latest novel is Tales from the Laundry Pile, which was recently reviewed at CLC as well.
Name: Kathleen Kole
Age: 45
Gender: Woman
Location: British Columbia, Canada
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
While it may sound sappy (which is fine, really, as I am a self-admitted sap) I’d say motherhood. It has taken me to places within myself - good, bad, ugly, beautiful - I never would have gone had I not embarked upon this parenthood journey. I had no idea, before my son was born, how utterly enthralling it is to watch another human being find their way in the world, nor how much it would connect me emotionally to the human race. So, again, while it may sound sappy, it is the truth.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Well, second question in and I’m stumped! (Seriously, this question made my mind go blank and even inspired me to look up the Wikipedia definition.) Anyway, after much consideration, I’ve come to the conclusion I have no guilty pleasure. I know that may sound unbelievable, but I cannot come up with one thing I do, eat, read etc. that I would consider as such. Apparently, I’m all out there! Haha!
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I would like to do more traveling; more directly, I would like to see more of North America (a cross country driving trip sounds like a fun adventure) and do some traveling through the UK.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
My recipe for coconut, chocolate chip cookies. They are sweet, chewy and delectable and I have yet to find anyone who didn’t love them and want more. Perfect with a cup of coffee, or a glass of milk; a good book, movie, or chat with a friend.
*What is something you did that changed someone's life?
I helped change my brother and his family’s life when I found them a lovely home to rent when they moved here to the Okanagan. They were unable, because of work, to make the trip to look for themselves and they entrusted me to do the job for them. It was my joy to be able to find them a warm and welcoming home to come to and it brought us all closer together as a family.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
The part that allowed me to drop the ball before a goal was completed. Once upon a time, I was able to start a project and once I became bored etc. I would move on - regardless of whether or not it was complete. I got a handle on that side of myself in my early twenties and I am ever so grateful that I did. Now, when I start something I finish it. Case in point, I have four published novels under my belt and my fifth being completed for 2014.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
Little children. They are so honest and open and genuine, they crack me up.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself.
I think I’m a good mother. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve certainly had my moments of being a blundering mess, but on the whole when I look at my sixteen year old son who is confident, kind, generous and personable, I know I’ve done a good job encouraging him to be who he is and have the assurance that I always have his back.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
I’d say the chatty parts of so many movies. For example, You’ve Got Mail, Before Sunrise, When Harry Met Sally, Serendipity, Music and Lyrics. Those movies, and so many more of their ilk, are so much like my life in their chatter; my husband and son are both communicators by nature, so I am blessed to be surrounded by lots of conversations and laughter.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I do not like high heels. Not only are they wickedly uncomfortable, but I do not happen to think they are attractive. I will always choose a cute, or funky, flat shoe (possibly with a VERY slight wedge heel) every time.

52 Stories: Land of the "Lost"
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this week's storyteller through my book blog. (Shocking, huh?!?) She seems really nice and I have enjoyed visiting her blog, as well. We also have quite a few things in common, aside from our love of books.
Name you'd like to go by: Amber
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Location: Oklahoma
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
I got to go to Hawaii. That was pretty cool. Everything was so pretty and colorful. Also I got to see some spots where Lost was filmed. I love Lost. I was more excited about it than my husband. I would be like, "This is where they hid from the smoke monster!" and he was like, "What? You watch the strangest things.."
What is your guilty pleasure?
Consuming a lot of chocolate. Although I really don't feel guilty about it. Until my pants don't close anymore and then I have to buy new clothes. Then my husband is all, "Aren't your drawers stuffed with jeans?" and I'm like, "Yes but they no longer close due to all the chocolate.."
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I'd love to have a book published. I have one self-published on Amazon (it's called The Swimmer's Assistant) but I'd love to have a book truly published and get an agent. I'm trying!
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
Probably chocolate. Because it's delicious. Or a gift card to Target, because Target rocks. I could spend hours in that store. Many of my friends love Target. I have not met anyone who hates Target. Who could hate Target?
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
I don't think I ever changed anyone's life but I have given away toys and such to people in need. I've also donated money and such so I suppose in a way it changed a life. I wish I could do more like buy someone a car but alas, we aren't related to a Trump so I cannot.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
I'm not sure. I used to be really shy. I talk more now. I can still be shy but now if I'm upset, I say something. I don't always say yes to all requests. I find I'm getting crankier with age.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
The movie Happy Gilmore. When celebrities forget to wear underpants. You'd think they'd learn by now.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
A gift I would LOVE would be a big house. We're in base housing and it's a nice house, but I'd love more space. I'm a bit of a pack rat so space would help.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
The Walking Dead. I'm kidding. Granted, I DO act like a zombie first thing in the morning...but really, I'm like the mom in The Goldbergs. I can't believe my kids are growing up and I worry a lot. Plus, I'm a bargain shopper like she is. I love a deal.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I can have a foul mouth. I try to contain it in public but at home, certain words slip. Especially if I've discovered that I'm out of Diet Coke.

52 Stories: Katydid
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this storyteller in the mid-90s, through a chat room on IRC. Here's more about our friendship. I'm so thankful that we reconnected on Facebook after losing touch for quite a few years. She's incredibly sweet and we have so many common interests (Glee for starters...). I know I can always count on her for the latest pop culture news.
Side note: I officially have 52 stories! However, if you wanted to participate, you're still welcome to and I will post your stories in the new year.
Name you'd like to go by: Kathryn, although I get called just about every short form of this
Age: 36 (I've been told I look 10 years younger though... ah, the blessing of good genes)
Gender: Female
Location: Ontario, Canada
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Legendary is not the word I would use; more appropriate would be life changing and unforgettable. In August 2012, my mom was diagnosed with AML (acute myeloid leukemia). For the next nearly five months, our family went through a roller coaster of emotions. Although we thought mom was going to beat the disease after her first round of treatment, unfortunately the leukemia proved to be more resilient than her and she passed away in January 2013. Throughout that time, my mom displayed such incredible strength and an unfailing desire to protect her family from pain. When you lose someone so important in your life, it's beyond difficult to understand the "why" of it. However, because of this experience, I've found myself in the position to help a very close friend with the loss of her mom from leukemia this year. I also became involved in the local Relay for Life (an all night walk and fundraising event to support the Canadian Cancer Society) and captained my own team. Being a part of an event like Relay is humbling and makes you feel a part of something so much bigger than yourself.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Oh, there are too many... I have an entire playlist on my iPod called guilty pleasures ("Mmmbop" and Joey Lawrence are among the songs). I buy US Weekly on a regular basis and I post things from Perez Hilton daily (pop culture nut). I used to watch The Hills and The City. I love Lindt chocolate. Hello Kitty and Happy Bunny. Boy bands.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I definitely want to travel to Scotland and Germany/Switzerland. This covers both sides of my family. Although, I highly suspect that if I went to Scotland, I wouldn't want to come home. Men in kilts *and* those accents?? *swoon*
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
Books and chocolate (I know this is two things but really, they go hand-in-hand). More importantly though, my love of reading and learning is something I would give to as many people as possible, because it encourages the use of imagination and expands the mind.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
Last December I made the decision to sponsor a little girl who lives in Bolivia through World Vision. I hope that I am changing her life for the better.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
When I was younger, writing stories was a way to escape and allowed me to create a world where my life could be any way I wanted it to be. As I got older, I learned to accept that my life may not be perfect, but everything happens for a reason.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
The Big Bang Theory is such a hilarious show. I also get in weird moods sometimes where something strikes me as so funny that I laugh way too hard. My brother's knee reflex makes me laugh so much. Years ago there was this commercial for air freshener and the doll exclaimed "Eww, eww, eww!!" For some reason, I howled every time I saw it. It still makes me giggle when I think about it.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I love that I do not give up easily. Some call it stubbornness. My mom used to call it determination. I also like that I am open-minded and compassionate.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Hmmm.... this is a difficult one to answer. While I can relate to characters and certain situations, there is not one show/book/movie where I have thought "This is so my life!" One of my all-time favourite characters is Benny from Circle of Friends because there is so much of me in her.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I used to want to be an author and wrote a book when I was 12/13 that started out as a short story for a creative writing assignment. Also some things that shock people to know about me:
1) I love True Blood
2) I have a "rock out" playlist that has Marilyn Manson, Ramstein and Limp Bizkit on it
3) I enjoy playing World of Warcraft
4) I take belly dance and Bollywood classes
5) I've never been drunk
6) I have a piercing in my left upper ear.

52 Stories: Seize the Day
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this week's storyteller after she wrote a comment on one of my book reviews. I found out that she's also an author with a book being published early next year. Of course, I invited her to do an interview at my book blog. I also knew that I would enjoy getting to know more about her through 52 Stories. Of course, I now have the Newsies soundtrack playing in my head as a result.
Name you'd like to go by: Laura Kenyon
Age: 30
Gender: Female
Location: New York area
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
That's a toss-up between taking a door-less helicopter ride over Kauai or Jeeping through Canyonlands in Utah. Both experiences were with my husband, both were absolutely amazing, and both came with brief moments in which I was pretty sure we were going to die.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I was not at all into Twilight, but The Vampire Diaries is a quasi-obsession of mine. I'm not sure if there's an age limit for watching the CW, but if Ian Somerhalder is still playing Damon Salvatore in 20 years, I'll still be watching.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
Backpack through Europe, though I probably missed that boat a good six years ago. When I started college in September of 2001, I had notebooks full of plans to do it the following summer... but the world changed pretty quickly around that time (or at least my sheltered perception of it did), and it just never panned out.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
My Newsies DVD. I was absolutely obsessed with that movie as a kid (who am I kidding? I'm still obsessed with it) and used to ask every new person I met if they'd seen it. If they loved it too, we were automatically meant to be best friends (ha). Now you can probably buy it online in two seconds, but when I first found it in stores years ago, it was monumental.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
I do my best to help people, and I can think of many times I've impacted people's lives, but trying to look back and judge my noblest moments just seems too boastful for me. So I'll just say marrying my husband. I think that changed his life a little bit ;)
What part of your personality is now extinct?
The part that obsesses over what other people think, particularly regarding body image and fashion. I eat well and exercise because I want to, I couldn't care less about overpriced designers, and I'm proud to say I shop at Kohls.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
Around Christmas, I put out this Santa Claus doll that swings his butt around and sings the song from "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." This on its own isn't particularly funny. But as my dog hears it, you'd think Santa was a home invader. Hair spiked up. Guttural growl. Booming bark. Shadow's a nearly 100-pound Labrador who can scale a cliff-face without thinking twice. But bring out Santa and it's ON!
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I hated it growing up, but I love my red hair. Yes, it turns out the adults were right.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Ha. Well, touring around Ireland with my husband, parents, and two of my brothers this past spring in a giant van... changing a tire on the side of the road, learning to drive on the left, meeting extended family, and just creating a whole smorgasbord of hilarious memories... I'd have to say any of the National Lampoon's Vacation movies. I have a big family, and although it's crazy at times, I wouldn't want it any other way.
What is something that not many people know about you?
When I first started college, I seriously contemplated majoring in drama because I'd sung in musicals during high school. Thank God my parents talked me out of that one!

52 Stories: A "Rose" by any other name
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I first met this storyteller in 2010, when I won a book from her blog, Novel Escapes. (It was a Marian Keyes book, no less.) Who would have thought that a few months later, I'd start my own book blog? And when I did, she was very encouraging and supportive. Then we sort of lost track of each other. I'd see her around on Facebook though. When she announced that she had her own novel being published, we reconnected. I enjoyed reading it and also got to feature her at the blog. Of course, I did a standard interview (with a fun twist) at that time. With 52 Stories, I've had the chance to get to know her even better. Hope you will enjoy getting to know her too!
Side note: I am TWO stories away from my goal! Any more I get beyond those will be posted early in the new year, as I want to show that I still appreciate the effort. However, I won't be doing this again next year unless 52 people voluntarily send me stories without me having to ask. Wishful thinking, right?

What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Although the event happened so recently, it has to be BookBuzz Toronto and the day after which I spent with a group of incredible authors and one beautiful blogger who braved our writing talk. I’ve never hung out with other writers before and can’t believe how much we didn’t shut up! We couldn’t even stop talking enough to decide what sights to show the out-of-towners, and in the end we didn’t even show them ANYTHING! Except the World’s Biggest Bookstore, of course. I might have even enjoyed our hours of chit chat more than BookBuzz. Shhhh.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Although I don’t do this (much) anymore, I love melting chocolate chips and dipping a spoonful of peanut butter in the chocolatey goodness. Mmmmm. Would you please excuse me for a moment?
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I’d like to travel somewhere solo, the more intricate and exotic the better. I’ve never traveled by myself, and although I’d probably be a little freaked out I think the experience would be incredible for a shy, introverted girl like me.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
This has to be books. I love being a book matchmaker and finding the right book for the right person.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
Although I may get struck down for being cliché, my debut novel, Redesigning Rose, has struck a chord with early readers. I’ve had the most wonderful feedback from those inspired to pick up a shovel to start a garden, to some recently separated women determined to make something of their torn-apart lives, to another who had come up with an idea and, after reading, really wants to make it a reality. I am honored to have been able to encourage and inspire others and as an author, there really is no better feedback.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
Giving everything for someone, to someone – usually a man – at my own expense. She’s LONG gone now.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
I’m not one to indulge, but some reason I find stoner humour hilarious. I could literally roll on the floor in tears from laughing. The episode of The Big Bang Theory where they’re camping and are offered spiked brownies is my favourite episode ever!
Tell me one thing you love about yourself.
I love that I never tire of learning. I’m always wanting to grow as a person and absorb anything I can from random facts to historical information. If I didn’t have to work I’d spend my days taking classes on subjects that interest me and writing novels. Ah, the dream.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Right now, as I write this? Doomsday Preppers. My husband just came home from Costco.
*What is something that not many people know about you?
I suffer from Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I haven’t been public about it and only those close to me know this.
I have struggled with both of these often intertwined illnesses for over fifteen years, the last three of which have been turnaround years. I’m on an upswing, but I’m still petrified every day that it will come back, that I’ll be in daily pain and sleeping for hours on end. Whenever I do too much – which is all the time lately – and become extra tired, debilitating fear creeps in. I wonder if I will always be burdened with this worry. But on the positive side, this fear makes me stop and take a few moments to re-evaluate, to prioritize and regroup. Sometimes all I need is a few moments of quiet, to take some time to myself, to take a day off and rest. Sometimes it really is just a matter of stopping to smell the roses, to be grateful and thankful. And not a day goes by that I’m not.
I haven’t shared this information for many reasons. It’s not that I don’t want to discuss it, or raise awareness, or cheer on those that have it. And it’s not just that I’m very private, which I am. The main reason is that I made a decision years ago that I didn’t want to let the illness define me. I wanted to focus on the positive, on the good days I have. So I try not to think about it or focus on it or even talk about it too much. And yes, this is all much easier now that I don’t struggle with the daily pain - I’m still working on the fatigue. I can often be heard saying how tired I am. I’m still working on that. I’m still a work in progress. And I’m okay with that. As long as I’m moving forward in the right direction, in the most positive and encouraging direction for me.
Name you'd like to go by: Lydia Laceby
Age: 39
Gender: Female
Location: Toronto, Canada

52 Stories: Hello...McFly!
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I've known this week's storyteller for a long time. We met when I was in college and stayed in contact even after moving to different parts of the country. The last time we hung out was in the summer of 2001, when he was back in Chicago for something to do with his job. A while back, he married a woman with whom I've become close friends, even though we've never met in person. I hope we all get to meet up someday, as I think he and my husband would get along well too. Today, he's answering my question about something people don't know about him.
Name: Kevin
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Location: Omaha, NE
It was a cold, dreary day in January the first time I time traveled. I won’t ever forget that day, because I can’t. That’s part of how this works. I was on a school bus heading towards school, head buried in headphones, while my Walkman pumped out Sly Fox’s “Let’s Go All the Way” through big, orange headphones. I looked out the opaque window of the bus and tried to imagine myself anywhere but here. Maybe someplace warm. Arizona. I just knew, as I sat in those green over-sized seats on that bus with no heat, I wasn’t happy where I was at the moment. I hadn’t realized it then, but that’s when my time traveling had started.
I don’t really travel in time, of course. That’s just what I’ve taken to calling it. It’s more of a visualization. When I’m in a situation in my life that I’m not particularly happy with, I try to see myself where I want to be. In that moment, I wanted to be off that bus and somewhere warm. There’s more to time traveling than just picturing myself somewhere else, or in a different situation though. In order to “time travel,” you have to be that future self you’re trying to connect with. Sometime in the future, I have to connect with myself in the past. I have to remember that point in my life, and look back on my past self and say “I’m someplace warm now. Everything is a lot better. You made it through.”
The time traveling has brought me a lot of solace in my life. When I’ve had a stressful time at work, when I was going through my divorce, any time I’ve felt like I just can’t take it anymore, I’ll look up at the sky and say “Hey future self, I’m going to make it through this, right? It’s going to get better and all work out in the end, isn’t it?” When I do that, I gain strength from my future self, and it gives me the resolve to make it through my tough time. Then, at some point in the future, when I catch myself thinking “Wow, things are really nice right now, I’m pretty happy,” I’ll look up into the sky, and think about all those times in the past. I’ll connect with myself in the past and I’ll say “Yes past self. Things worked out ok, and life is pretty good right now.” I give my past self the strength he needs to move forward. It was a warm, beautiful day on a beach in Mexico - my honeymoon - the last time I connected with that cold boy on the bus. I’m pretty sure he felt that warm sun on his face in the past, just as much as I did at the time.
My name is Kevin, and I’m a time traveler.

52 Stories: The Name Game
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
This week's storyteller is also a book blogger, so we've connected through knowing a lot of the same authors. She's really nice and funny and I've enjoyed learning more about her. Try NOT to laugh while reading this....I dare you!
Name you'd like to go by: First name Julie, last name Valerie. Or, if you really like to party:
Julie, Julie bo-bulie
Banana-fana fo-fulie
Fee-Fi-mo-mulie
JULIE!
Age (or age range): 40-ish. Something. Kinda sorta. Um. Let’s just say I was born in the 1970s. So that would make me 43 on the high end. Oh, dang! I just said it. Okay. FINE. The cat’s out of the bag: I’m 43. *shoulders slump in defeat*
Gender: Pink.
Location: Universe, Milky Way Galaxy, Earth, Northern Hemisphere, North America, America, Mid-Atlantic East Coast, Virginia, Richmond area, cul-du-sac, house, writing/art studio, brown leather office chair that just like the Earth, spins around really, really FAST! Wheeeeeeee!!!
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
While wearing my birthday suit (ah hem) I jumped off an icy dock, through a large hole chiseled through two feet of ice on top of a tributary of the Baltic Sea off the coast of Finland. December 1995. And I lived to tell about it. Actually, the cold water, followed by having my back slapped over and over again with harvested birch branches was such a shock to my heart and nervous system, that it caused an adrenaline rush to surge through my blood and out my eyeballs. Okay, nothing really happened to my eyeballs, but I couldn’t sleep for four days and four nights and thought, surely, the experience had turned me into a vampire.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I can’t tell. I feel so guilty and I’m too ashamed. But man, oh, man is it AWESOME!!! WooHoo!
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I’ve always wanted to homestead for a year in Alaska. Just to see if I could do it. I’d like to arrive at the end of one winter, then prep like a mad woman during the summer, and then see what becomes of me through a long cold winter. I wonder: Could I kill a bear? Do I have it in me? Or at least, if I became hungry enough, could I kill my husband and eat him? I think I could probably read 83 books, write 3.6 novels, knit 27 sweaters or one big arse blanket, and curse the snow in creative ways at least a dozen times each day before lunch. Maybe I’d become so rugged I’d grow a beard and a belly and start wearing suspenders. Probably not? Oh. Well, then. Maybe I’ll pass the time yodeling. Do Alaskans yodel? Probably not.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
One of my hand-stitched, machine-free quilts. Because the sleeping beneath is good and the dreams you dare to dream really do come true.
What is something you did that changed someone’s life?
I helped a blind man shop. But I didn’t change his life. He changed mine.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
The part that thought it was a good idea to climb out the second-story window of my friend’s house onto the roof. What a mess that was. I got stuck straddling the top of her garage.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
Really funny? Really, really, funny? A little baby kitty stuck up a tree. No, just kidding. Seriously. That’s not funny. What’s funny is TWO little baby kitties stuck up a tree. Now that’s funny! No, seriously. I’m just being silly. Sorry. *clears her throat, taps her lips with her index finger to indicate she’s thinking really, really hard* I know! One thing that’s really funny is TEOTWAWKI! That’s my final answer. If that ever happens, that would be hysterical. Just hysterical! Really. It would be, just, um. So funny. (Confused? You might want to Google it.)
Tell me one thing you love about yourself:
I love that I’m a child of God. Can’t get better than that because He’s pretty cool and I’m a huge fan.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Only, I’m the wimpy kid’s wimpy mom. That’s sort of the concept behind the book I am writing. Humorous mom lit. About a horrible, no good, very bad, epic fail of a mom struggling to survive the competitive mom world inside the prestigious gates of Pimm’s Academy. Imagine Bridget Jones reluctantly serving a school year in the PTA. Chapter one closes with a mom wrestling a three-foot long Chinese green water lizard while riled up, chirping crickets surround her ankles. Hey, it could happen. She was setting up for the science fair and dropped the lizard cage. This shitake happens to moms ALL THE TIME.
What is something that not many people know about you?
Hands down, in my personal life, most people do not know that I’m a writer, that I’m almost finished with my first book, and that I have a book blog. I’ve been told I “write funny emails” but whenever someone tells me I should write a book, I always laugh it off or stare at them like a deer caught in headlights. (Cliché!) I typically change the subject and ask them something random and awkward like what’s their favorite song - can they hum a few bars - or do they like meat and green peppers in their spaghetti sauce. Seriously, most people who know me in my “real” life, would probably say, “Julie? You mean, Julie, Julie bo-bulie, Banana-fana fo-fulie, Fee-Fi-mo-mulie, JULIE? Her? Oh, sure. I know her. And judging by how she spends all her free time, I’d say she aspires to drive carpools. Or maybe to do some more laundry or defrost chicken breasts. Something like that.” I suppose that (soon) I’ll have to muster up enough confidence to come out of the proverbial closet and confess to the moms in my mom circle that I’ve written a tell-all book about the mom world. BUT IT’S ALL JUST FICTION, LADIES. IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. OR ME. PAY NOOOO ATTENTION TO THE SOCIAL SATIRE IN THE BOOK. IT’S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH REAL LIFE. Oh, gosh. The thought of it makes me so nervous I think I’m about to get sick. Yup! I am. I just threw up a little in my mouth. *gasps* That’s so gross. Oh, gosh. I’m so sorry, Melissa. I’ve ruined your "One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern" campaign with this lousy set of answers. Jumping naked into the Baltic Sea? Yodeling in rural Alaska? TEOTWAWKI?! And you were so nice to invite me to participate and now I’ve ruined it. I’ve just ruined it. Oh, dang! I wish I hadn't told everyone I once got stuck on the roof of my friend's house. *kicks the curb; stubs her toe* OUCH!

52 Stories: Her own little library
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this week's storyteller through Chick Lit Central, as well. We e-mail on occasion about books and Glee. Motherhood is a topic we've talked about more recently, as well. She's really nice and I'm happy to learn more about her in this way.
Name: Sabrina-Kate Eryou
Age: 35
Gender: Female
Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
There are so many legendary experiences that I have been fortunate to have. Incredible things seem to just happen to me, and I also have a knack in making ordinary things incredible. Sometimes it is all in the perspective! I can probably say that this life is legendary for many reasons.
My guilty pleasure is chocolate, definitely! It probably would have been something else a year or more ago but since I had my daughter, I crave sweet stuff AND I am apparently, hopefully temporarily, allergic to alcohol. Reading is also my guilty pleasure. My closet is even full of books!
Something I have never done but I would like to do? That is a tough one because I like to do whatever I want so I have tried lots of different things. Maybe travel more? I do love being at home though but the world fascinates me!
One of my favorite things that I would give as a gift would definitely be some sort of book, depending on them and who they are, what would interest them. Reading opens up so many new worlds! And let's face it, I have A LOT of books to choose from!
I think the something I did that changed someone's life was to love them. My bf has a complicated relationship with his family and I don't necessarily think a healthy one. I just show him love every day and in many ways and it has changed him, for the better. He is a wonderful person but I think he had never been treated like this before.
The part of my personality that is extinct is the selfish side. We all have it but I definitely had my fair share of it in my 20s. Now I have my own family and my father is also ill so I focus on making others happy and helping out however I can!
One thing I find really funny would probably be a great stand up comic like Eddie Izzard or Nikki Payne. I love how a lot of comics like to poke fun at themselves.
One thing I love about myself is my compassion. I truly try to do nice things for people on a regular basis. It usually doesn't take much to do and can really make all the difference sometimes.
When I was a teenager, My So-Called Life was most like my life. I would like to think that I still am like Claire Danes but sadly I am not in the CIA (but I love Homeland!)
Something not many people know about me? Hmmm, this is a tough one but probably just how scared I get at times. My Dad is battling cancer and has been quite sick recently. I worry about the future a lot and the possible future without him. I try not to let it show because I am trying to be strong for my family but sometimes I cry myself to sleep at night.
I met this week's storyteller through Chick Lit Central, as well. We e-mail on occasion about books and Glee. Motherhood is a topic we've talked about more recently, as well. She's really nice and I'm happy to learn more about her in this way.
Side note: I am getting so close to my 52 story goal, but part of November and all of December are still waiting for stories. If you would like to participate or know someone else who might be interested, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!

52 Stories: Independent woman
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
This week's storyteller is another frequent visitor to Chick Lit Central. I love her enthusiasm for books and have enjoyed learning more about her through this project.
Name: Hailey Fish
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Location: Pawcatuck, CT
The experience that is legendary is when I flew to Australia and lived there for three months with my older sister and her husband. It was legendary because it was the first time I've ever been out of the country by myself. It was awesome to spend time with just my sister and Paul. It was a chance for me to be independent.
My guilty pleasure is books and magazines. Even though magazines are ridiculously priced, I still want to buy one or two. I enjoy doing the celebrity crossword puzzles they have at the end. Even though I end up throwing them out, I just have to buy them. Whenever I go on vacation, I buy all the trashy ones like National Enquirer for example. Books are also a guilty pleasure because even though I can get the same books from the library, I get impatient because sometimes it's months before it's my turn.
The one thing I've never done but would love to do is learn how to drive. It would be so much easier on my parents if I had my license and my own vehicle to get where I need to go. It's also a sign of independence because then I'd be careful about driving and I'd pay for my own car insurance. It's just the matter of time to actually sit down, read the manual and then take the permit test and then actually learn how to drive.
One gift I'd love to give to someone that is a favorite of mine would be my love of books. It makes me sad when I hear that some people don't like to read. What's not to love? You get drawn into a world not your own, meet characters that you feel as if you've known forever. I wouldn't be the woman I was if it weren't for reading. For every book you read, you get to visit a different world. I think the more people who read, the better off we all are.
How I've changed someone's life: I honestly think just being me, a sweet, kind-hearted, compassionate woman who would do anything for anyone. Even if I get hurt, I make sure everyone I come across is taken care of. I would say my best friend Allie because I've stuck by her side when not even her own family did. I was there for her through our entire six-year friendship.
The one part of my personality I think is extinct would probably be the feeling of being afraid to do things. Growing up, I was always afraid to do things because I thought people would laugh at me and say I can't or I shouldn't. I'm a lot more confident in myself ever since I kicked my ex-fiancé to the curb. I'm so much happier with myself and know I deserve a man who will support me through the good and bad, not bring me down for things I have no control over.
The one thing I find funny is when I say something funny that makes my close family and friends laugh.
The one thing I love about myself is that I'm such a good person.
I don't think there is a tv show or movie that is most like my life.
Something not many people know about me: I'm on the high-functioning side of autism. You never notice until you get to know me because some things I do, other people might not do. I'm very obsessed with reading and I never like to get rid of books even of I don't read them anymore.

52 Stories: Serenity now
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
Name: Denise K.
Gender: Female
Age: 45
Location: Chicagoland (the north half)
Experience that is legendary for me:
When I was 24, I moved to Los Angeles and spent two and a half years hanging out with my best friend, Michelle, and a whole bunch of long-haired boys in bands. I wasn’t a groupie by any stretch of the imagination, but my California world was a complete 180 from the uniformed, Catholic school girl, straight-A lifestyle I’d been living in Chicago. I spent my 25th birthday celebrating at a rock club on Hollywood Boulevard. I wore a tiara and I got to pick the bands that played that night. Nowadays, when I tell people about that time in my life, they look quite bemused, probably because I’m an attorney mom of three who lives in jeans and North Face gear and drives a mini-van.
Guilty pleasure:
Edible: peanut butter M&Ms.
Pop culture: Amish Mafia and Dr. Drew.
Auditory: Slipknot.
Time-wise: thrift stores and flea markets.
Something I’ve never done but would like to do:
Karaoke. I love to sing but have never done so in public. In my car, I belt out Pat Benetar and Sheryl Crow and k.d. lang – anyone with a low-ish pitch. Karaoke never really appealed to me until I read “Turn Around Bright Eyes” by Rob Sheffield and decided I HAVE to do it. I would probably choose to sing “Midnight Train to Georgia” so long as I had the right Pips to back me up. That, or “Paradise by the Dashboard Light,” but I’d need a solid Meatloaf.
If I could give someone one of my favorite things as a gift, what I would give and why:
Last summer, on a business trip, my husband bought me a little angel statue. She is made of wood and is sitting down with her head resting on her hands and her elbows on her knees. I’m not religious by any stretch of the imagination, but I was going through a really rough time and he thought I could use a little someone to watch over me. I keep it on the windowsill in the kitchen, and it always makes me happy. It was the perfect gift, full of love. I would pass it on to someone else who needed an angel on his or her shoulder.
Something I did that changed someone’s life:
In my senior year of high school, a friend told me she wanted to be a nurse but didn’t think she could do it. Her parents weren’t encouraging her to try. I told her that she had to try, that I knew she could do it and that she would always regret not trying. She said, “Huh, maybe you’re right.” She went on to nursing school and has happily practiced nursing for twenty-five years.
Part of my personality that is now extinct:
I am much less of a control freak than I used to be. The past few years I experienced quite a lot of loss, and I’ve come to understand that there is much I cannot control; I can merely react and manage and support. My own variation of the Serenity Prayer, I suppose.
One thing I find really funny:
Anything stupid funny. Like when people fall down. Or the entire film, Zoolander. I think you have to be really smart to fully embrace stupid funny (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it).
One thing I love about myself:
Generally, I am able to get along with just about anyone. I pride myself on being polite and kind to anyone I meet – unless they give me reason to act otherwise.
TV show, book or movie most like my life:
It’s Hard Not to Hate You by Valerie Frankel. I’m at that mid-life point where I’m grappling between accepting who I am – warts and all – and making some changes in how I see the world and how I deal with people. The tone of the book is maybe a touch more bitter than I’d like to think I am, but maybe I just need to accept that part of me, too.
One thing most people don’t know about me:
Although I’m friendly and easily make small talk, I am actually pretty introverted and prefer to keep to myself.
I recently met this week's storyteller through my BFF. She's also going to be part of our blog project group, starting this week. I look forward to getting to know her better, and her participation in "52 Stories" is a good start! I already know the first place we'd go if she ever came to visit...
Side note: I am getting so close to my 52 story goal, but the months of November and December are still waiting for stories. If you would like to participate or know someone else who might be interested, please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!

52 Stories: This is *really* 40
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
One of the many joys of owning a book blog is connecting with authors I might not have met otherwise. One of these authors is today's storyteller. I met her back in May of 2012, when her debut novel, Finding Lucas, first became published. We soon found ourselves talking about anything and everything. She's so kind-hearted and down-to-earth. I didn't review her book for my blog because I knew I'd come off as biased, as I adored her too much by the time I would have the opportunity to read it. So I held off on even reading it for a while, putting focus on books I intended to review for my blog. Then I decided to finally check out her novel for the fun of it. I still think of it and laugh because it is so clever and funny. I'd love it even if we weren't friends and I'd have no problem giving constructive criticism if I found flaws. However, it is flawless. If you're looking for a fun, humorous and sweet chick lit novel, look no further than Finding Lucas. While she's not writing novels, our storyteller still has other stories to share, which is why I invited her to participate in this project!
Name you'd like to go by: Samantha Stroh Bailey
Age: 40 (gulp)
Gender: Female
Location: Toronto
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
The day I published my first novel, Finding Lucas, is something I will never forget. I have been writing since I was ten years old, and though a published journalist, my greatest dream was to see my novel online and in paperback. I must admit I shed more than a few tears because how often do we get to experience the dream of a lifetime actually happen? And it not only taught me that we have to believe in our talent and go after what we want, but also that this dream has only begun. I have always loved writing, but knowing that readers have loved my book and have been so kind as to leave reviews and reach out to me has made writing even more of a passion. I am so lucky.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Chips and TV, preferably eating chips while watching TV.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I have a lot of fear when it comes to dangerous activities so there are a lot of things I’ve never done. But something I love is traveling. I saw quite a bit of the world in my younger years, and that is definitely a plan I have for in the future. This is terrible, but I’ve never seen Western Canada. The cost is quite high to fly there so I’ve always spent that money on going to Europe instead. But is such a gorgeous part of our country, and I would love to experience it.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
One of my favorite things is books so I would absolutely give a book. Reading is such a wonderful escape, an opportunity to learn and grow and often gives us exactly what we are looking for at any given time. And there are so, so many books I’ve read that have stayed with me years later. Those are the ones I would give as a gift.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
Wow, that’s a hard question. I don’t know that I’ve ever changed someone’s life, but on a small scale, I think my business helps a lot of people. I’m a professional writer/editor and every day, I get to work with the most incredible clients. I never write academic papers, but I edit them and love that aspect of my job so much. Helping someone get into their dream Masters program by editing their personal statement or working with them on their PhD dissertation is wonderful. A lot of people are scared to write and need the confidence to know they can and to find out what they need to do to improve. Knowing how amazing it is to publish a book, some of my favorite clients are aspiring and published authors. I get enormous pleasure from editing manuscripts and love when I see the finished product. So, I guess helping people make their dreams come true is changing their lives in some way. But it also changes mine.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
Shyness! People are amazed that I was very shy when I was younger because I am now usually the most talkative person in a room. I’ve always been very small, and when I was little, I wanted to hide in the shadows rather than shine. But, as I got older, I realized that though I am small, I am mighty, and it gave me confidence to put myself out there.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
I like irreverent, smart humor. A movie like, This is 40, makes me howl. Or books that don’t shy away from spicy language and flawed characters.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I love that I enjoy simple pleasures and am very positive. I think life is so short and it’s about following your passion, filling your life with good, kind people and enjoying the small things. Money keeps us going, for sure, but for me, joy comes from a great conversation, laughter and being with the people I love. I love this about myself because I don’t need a lot to make me happy.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
I’m going to date myself here and say Friends. Now, I don’t live in New York City or hang around in coffee shops, but I have a very close group of friends, and we have known each other for almost twenty years. We met in Montreal, and at one point, many of us lived in the same duplex on St. Urbain. Not together, but that place had a revolving door. Life has changed a lot in the past twenty years: we have kids, we live in different cities and we’re all so busy. But when we see each other, it’s like no time has passed, and we’re back to being those fresh-faced (yet drunk) 20 year-olds who had their whole lives ahead of them.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I was a competitive dancer for many years when I was younger and actually thought I’d end up at Juilliard. But, when my friends and fun seemed better than constant practices, rehearsals and shows, I quit. To this day, I regret not going on with my dancing because I loved it so much. But, I now get my groove on when my friends and I go dancing (on a rare Saturday night), and one day, I want to take hip hop classes so I can actually do that twerking thing that everyone is talking about.
52 Stories: Butterfly kisses (and hugs)
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I connected with this storyteller through my book blog and other similar groups we're in on Facebook. We also have some online friends in common. She's really nice and I enjoyed reading her answers to my questions...especially the last two.
Name you’d like to go by: I answer to Kimberly or Kim, my close relatives and friends will also call me Kimmy. I like to use the name Kimberlyindy when I review books.
Age: 40+

What is your guilty pleasure?
I have a couple of guilty pleasures. I love to be able to stay in my pajamas all day and alternate watching movies and reading. Some of my favorite movies are A Walk in the Clouds, Serendipity, Sabrina and almost all Christmas movies (which I have been known to watch in July.) I generally read Romance and Chick Lit. Some of my favorite authors are Jane Porter, Megan Crane/Caitlin Crews, Debra Kahn, Melissa Cutler, Anita Hughes Jude Deveraux, Susan Mallery and Jill Shalvis. If I can afford to indulge myself, I love to go stay in a hotel and go to their spa. I have learned that you can get a day pass and enjoy the experience of the spa without spending a fortune. =)
What is something you’ve never done but would like to do?
I have always wanted to try zip lining, riding in a hot air balloon, and scuba diving. I would also like to travel all over. My bucket list includes Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Greece, and Australia.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
I love to watch Comedian Jeff Dunham
What is one thing you love about yourself?
People tell me that I am able to adapt to most situations and I can find something to talk about with everyone. I love people and I find every person interesting in their own way. I have always been able to make friends easy.
What is something you did that changed someone’s life?
This is a hard question to answer, because I try to perform random acts of kindness almost daily, and I always hope that I somehow make their life a little better. I definitely believe in the philosophy of pay it forward.
What is something that not many people know about you?
Well I have a couple of things, not sure which would be the most surprising. I was in a nationally televised commercial when I was in High School that was shown at all of the Indianapolis Colts games. I was in a type of plane crash in 1991 in Colorado. I lived on my own my senior year of High School. Feel free to ask me to elaborate on any of those.
What part of your personality is extinct?
I hope you don’t mind but I took a little liberty with this question and changed it a little bit.
If something is was a good part of your personality and it ceases to exist that isn’t a good thing. I prefer to think of it as hibernating. For me this was my creativity. This was something I definitely thought was extinct, but recently has found a spark and has comes back to life. Throughout my life, I had done different things to feed this side of my personality. I actively participated in the theatre in different capacities, and I enjoyed writing and was on the journalism staff and did speech and debate where I wrote originally oratories and poetry for competition. Then several years ago a few things happened to put my creativity in hibernation, one I got very busy with life and working way too many jobs, and going to school, etc. But probably one of the greatest factors was an English professor I had. For whatever reason, she did not like me, and after having her for a semester I no longer had any desire to write. She accused me of plagiarism, which I had to fight and was able to prove that I had not done that. And she was constantly putting comments on my works like “congratulations on changing a fiasco of a paper to a mediocre paper.” It is amazing how powerful words and actions can be……..Fast forward 20 years and I can honestly say that two things/people have really influenced me and help reignite my creative side. About rwo years ago my work sent me to a motivational event, and one of the presenters was a man named Erik Wahl. He is an artist that creates incredible paintings with his hands, timed to music. If you have never heard of him, I encourage you to check him out. He talked to us about a teacher when he was in elementary school telling him that he had no talent and he didn’t so much as pick up a crayon for over 20 years because of this. It brought back the memory of that English professor and really got me thinking about what I had given up. I honestly don’t remember what he said what motivated him to try art again, probably because my own brain was on overdrive thinking about the past and what I used to love to do. Just a little side fact about him, he no longer sells his art work, he donates it to charity auctions or gives it away through what he calls art drops (he hides the paintings and leaves clues on social media and the first person to find it, gets to keep it). The second influence has been my friend Jane Porter. I met Jane purely by accident about three years ago at a local Barnes and Noble. I had never read any of her books before, but became a fan that day. I got to know her through her blog and Facebook page. After going to few different events, where she talked about all things writing, the good, the bad, and even some of the ugly; it made me want to try writing again. I took a summer writing class and with Jane’s encouragement I went to a Romance Writer’s Conference this past spring. For now, I am only writing for me, but who knows what may happen in the future. I have made a promise to myself so that I never let my creative side become extinct again. I try to do something creative every day. I have been taking painting lessons and making home-made cards, and yes sometimes I do have to push myself out of my comfort zone to try something new and creative; but I am okay with that.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
I often give butterflies as gifts. They hold a very special place in my heart. While I have always loved butterflies, about 15 years ago, they became very significant part of my life. When my grandfather passed away, my grandmother told me that he came to visit her that night as a beautiful monarch butterfly and stayed beside her all night. My grandmother and I started giving each other butterflies back and forth after that day, so we would always have grandpa with us. Even though my grandma has Alzheimer’s and is in a facility, we still keep her surrounded by butterflies. When she was able to walk, we posted a large purple butterfly outside her room and that was how she knew which room was hers. I swear, if I am having a bad day or feeling a little lonely, a butterfly always crosses my path. Just the other day, a butterfly actually flittered all around me like it was hugging me before taking off. It brought a smile to my face and made me laugh out loud. It felt magical and I could almost see a little sparkly trail it was leaving behind. I enjoy giving butterflies to people, and some I tell the significance of them to me and others, it just feels right. If I know someone is struggling, I think a butterfly is the perfect gift to give them, because butterflies show us that is not easy to make it in this world, but that we are beautiful and we can take flight.

52 Stories: Something to sink your teeth into
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I don't personally know this week's storyteller. A friend of mine passed the questions along to her as she felt she'd be someone interesting to read about. My friend was right about that!
Name you'd like to go by: Katie Lee
Age (or age range): 40’s
Gender: Female
Location: Maryland
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
I just published my first book, What Endures. That was pretty epic because this was a dream that I’ve had since I was 15 years old. I still have a “whoa!” moment when I go to Amazon.com and see my book listed there.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I like vampire shows. I watch The Vampire Diaries and True Blood faithfully. I’m looking forward to the Dracula show with Jonathan Rhys-Myers this fall. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was one of my favorite shows ever.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
There are SO MANY things which I think is a sign that I still love this crazy little journey called “life.” Just some things off the top of my head are – be an extra in a movie, scuba dive, live in France for a few months, ride a motorcycle.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
It’d probably be a book. . .or chocolates. Heck, why not both? Books and chocolates!
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
Gosh this is tough. I honestly don’t know. I hope if I have changed someone’s life, it’s for the better. I try and subscribe to the “pebble in a pond” rule. . .that you never know the real impact of your actions because something small could have far reaching consequences, just like the waves that radiate outwards when you drop a pebble in a pond, so make sure your actions are as well-intentioned as possible.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
I don’t know that it’s extinct but it’s getting to be less and less of a factor which is my tendency to worry. I used to worry all the time about the ‘what-if’s’ and I started to realize that it was letting fear be the driver of my life choices. So in the last few years I’ve taken the approach that I should just jump in and see what happens and it’s been a pretty incredible ride. I mean there have been some bumps and bruises but no regrets.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
I feel mean for saying this but people falling down. I used to laugh uproariously at America’s Funniest Home Videos – still do when I catch a re-run. I am klutzy myself so believe me when I bump into the things, I’m the first one cracking up!
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I like my resiliency and persistence. Once I’ve made up my mind about something, I don’t let anything stop me. I’ve faced a lot of obstacles in life and I’m proud to say I’ve overcome a lot too. Losing my hearing at 17 should have derailed me from my dream of becoming an attorney, but it didn’t. Similarly, having my manuscript stuck in limbo with an agent that couldn’t get it unstuck should have derailed my dreams of becoming a published author but it didn’t. I don’t see obstacles, I see challenges and I love challenges (as long as there are cupcakes and chocolates along the way!)
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
I wish it was like Veronica Mars where I’m kicking ass left and right, but it’s probably more When Harry Met Sally with the neurotic over-thinking and kvetching with good friends.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I get hurt easily but don’t necessarily show it. I think years of having to be strong have given me a tough exterior – that’s probably one of the things people will tell you about me – that I’m strong or “feisty” but my feelings do get hurt and only those really close to me ever know it or see it.

52 Stories: Doing it all
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this storyteller through my book blog. I enjoyed learning more about her this way! She is also a book blogger!
Name you'd like to go by: Jennifer
Age: My oldest guessed my age a few years ago and thought that I was 15. My husband promptly made me correct her and told me that I couldn’t lie about my age. With that said I’m 33.
Gender: Female
Location: Atlanta, GA
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Being a mother is my greatest accomplishment, what I am most proud of and legendary experience. Having both E and B has proven to me that being a mother is like watching your heart exist outside your body and I am constantly amazed at the capacity of a mother to love - you love your child more the next day then you did the day before. My heart stretches a little bigger every day making more room for them. Every day I don't think I could ever love the girls more...and then the next day, I do.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Really really bad reality TV. I’ll admit it – the trashier the show is on Bravo I have probably seen it. I don’t know what it is about those shows. It’s not as if I want drama in my life but it’s soooo good! I just can’t stop watching.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
Last night, my husband and E were watching a survivor show (Bear Grylls new show). The contestants were rock climbing and when they reached the summit it was one of the most amazing views I’ve ever seen. Now while I love reality TV, I don’t want to be on a show but I think to have an experience like that -- rock climbing would be breathtaking.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
It would be the gift of reading. I know it sounds silly. But next to my family, reading is one of my greatest joys and ways to escape. It saddens me greatly that more people don’t read – whether it’s because they don’t have the opportunity or because they’d want to. I can’t imagine my life without books.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
The day my stepdaughter came into my life at the sweet age of two not only changed my life but changed hers also. Over the past eight years, she has grown into a loving, mature, confident young lady. E is one of the bravest girls – people – I’ve ever met and to know I contributed to one iota takes my breath away.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
I try to look at life as just life -- and not good and bad-- in other words not get caught up in the drama and trauma of emotions. I would like to find peace and serenity in the simple things of life- and to let go of past disturbances- which seem to crop up as a checkpoint to show me how far I've come- or what progress I need to make.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
Having just seen The Hangover Part III I’d have to say those movies. The chemistry between all five characters is priceless. They play off of each other really well and each character is so unique in their personality and mannerisms.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
If money were not an issue, I’d love to travel back to both Ireland and Italy and stay there for a month or so – just soak up the food, the culture, the language. And get a house on the beach.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Probably the book I Don’t Know How She Does It. I think as a working mom – well as a mom in general – you are constantly striving to find that balance in your life. Yes, I’m that mom who will make homemade baked goods for something at the girls’ school because I can’t stand the thought of turning in store bought cookies. Am I crazy? Probably. :)
What is something that not many people know about you?
I may seem like a very social extrovert, but I’m a big homebody. I love people, but I also need a lot of quiet time at home.

52 Stories: Young at heart
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this storyteller through my book blog. I love her enthusiasm for chick lit and she has such a warm and lovable personality. She's closer in age to my parents and I could see her getting along well with them if she lived in their neck of the woods. However, I also forget that she's the age she says she is because she's so young at heart.
Name you'd like to go by: Connie
Age: 67
Gender: Female
Location: Fort Myers, Florida
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
My husband and I had the opportunity to move to Paris France to live for six years. He was "on loan" from his position at NASA to a NATO Research and Development organization located in Paris. In actuality, we went for a three-year tour in the late 1970s and he was asked to go again in the late 1980s. The first time we went, we had two small sons who attended the American School of Paris. We opted to live in a house in the suburbs in an area known as La Celle St. Cloud. I spent a lot of my time assisting in the children's classrooms and in the school library. The second time we went, was easier for me. Our older son was attending college in the U.S. and our younger son would finish his high school years at the American School of Paris. This time, we got a lovely apartment in the Neuilly part of Paris and I worked at the American Embassy. We were able to do a lot of traveling and we experienced so many wonderful things about this most amazing city. I recently read Paris, I Love You But You Are Bringing Me Down by Rosecrans Baldwin. It is a story about two American Ex-Patriates who decide to move and work in Paris. Their experiences are so familiar to me and only cement all of the things I learned while living there. If you have any interest in Paris, this might be a fun read for you.
What is your guilty pleasure?
My guilty pleasure is and always has been reading ever chance I get. I like all types of genres. My favorites are chick lit, historical and contemporary romance, biographies and non-fiction.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I have been on some cruises before but I would love to take a cruise around the world. I realize it would be a long time, however, I feel that visiting all kinds of new places and learning about them would be thrilling.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
I guess I sound like a broken record, however, I would give books as gifts. It's my favorite thing to receive so why not give what I love?
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
That's a really hard question. As the proud mother of two wonderful, grown sons, I would like to think that I had a hand in bringing them up in a good way so that they turned out to be the fabulous men that they are today.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
I think that would have to fall under how I had to always be so professional when I was working. Now that I'm retired, I feel as though I can be myself all day every day. This means if I want to be a goofball, I can and no one can fire me! ;-)
What is one thing that you find really funny?
I adore cats and could easily be a Crazy Cat Lady. We have two kitties and watching and laughing at their antics all day brings me so much joy.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
As a 19-year breast cancer survivor, I would love to give myself and others the priceless gift of eradicating cancer from this world.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
While I cannot actually pinpoint anything in particular, it would have to be something where humor and laughter is always occurring. My husband and I like to think that we grew up with our sons and we all had such fun during this time. Even today, we love to get together and jokes are always at the top of the agenda.
What is something that not many people know about you?
My father passed away leaving my Mom with three little children under the age of three. While things were not easy when we were kids, we learned to make do, be strong and get along with what we had. I am so very thankful for the great upbringing my Mother gave us. She taught us the truly good values in life and to love one another. What more could one ask for?
I met this storyteller through my book blog. I love her enthusiasm for chick lit and she has such a warm and lovable personality. She's closer in age to my parents and I could see her getting along well with them if she lived in their neck of the woods. However, I also forget that she's the age she says she is because she's so young at heart.

52 Stories: 100% pure adrenaline!
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this storyteller through one of my son's schools, as our sons have the same first name. Since then, I've gotten to know her and we've become good friends. She's really kind, generous, funny, and a great person to have in your corner. I'm thankful for her friendship. I've gotten to know her even better through this project and a lot of what she has said surprised me!
Name you'd like to go by: Dana
Age: 37
Gender: Female
Location: Washington, DC Metro region
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Chatting with Billy Joel on more than one occasion, then having the opportunity to work with him. I grew up in a household with die-hard Billy Joel fans, so I was learning the “Turnstile” soundtrack along with “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”
What is your guilty pleasure?
Entertainment magazines and pop culture aficionado: While I love my business focused mags like Fast Company, Inc., and Fortune Small Business – the ones that I devour are People, Entertainment Weekly, and US Weekly. I mean come on ---- Who doesn’t also love “Stars – They’re Just Like Us” and “Who Wore it Best?”
I’m also a HUGE fan of indie music. I go to shows, concerts, and festivals to hear random, new cutting room floor tunes. I like to learn about the music before it goes mainstream.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I’d love to do a Ted Talk on the importance of accessibility and breaking down barriers surrounding disability. Although, I’d like to live in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language and force myself to learn it.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
I would give someone a special backpack filled with 1.) a map, 2.) a passport (if needed), and 3.) time. The adventure of getting out and seeing the world all over is a priceless gift given to me and I’d like to share that. That or some really delicious New York pizza.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
When I was 16, I worked in a local pharmacy. I sold a $5 Million dollar lottery ticket to a woman who was in from out of town caring for her ill elderly mother. She came in to claim it and FLIPPED out when she learned she just became a millionaire. It was thrilling and I had a perma-smile on my face for days.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
The published poet side of me has been kind of dormant for around 15 years. I wrote a massive amount of poetry for around a decade, but then haven’t really come back to it much.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
My children keep me entertained all the time and do the silliest things. I think our random Victrola dance parties are really funny.
When work gets really intense at times, I also really enjoy George Takei memes for a quick laugh during the work day.
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I’m comfortable in my own skin and that’s a gift I’ll keep.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
Don’t know.
What is something that not many people know about you?
1. I am an adrenaline junkie and have been skydiving, scuba diving, ridden motorcycles, flown a plane, and more. I can' wait to go hang gliding one day.
2. I kick-butt at Mah-Jongg. Bring it!
3. I LOVE old school Mortal Kombat.
4. I consider myself one of the luckiest people on the planet, as my family and friends are the most precious things in my life.
5. I ride a motorcycle and would love to get a Dukati one day.
6. I have had to recite Lewis Carrol's "The Jabberwocky" from Alice in Wonderland on more than one occasion to bail me out of stuff.
7. Spring is my favorite season. Although as a child, I was enamored with summer as it meant sleep away camp which I adored.
8. My favorite city in the world is Austin, Texas. Then probably Barcelona, Spain.
9. I am hopelessly addicted to indie-rock, cutting edge, alternative, music.
10. I have several friends that I have been friends with for over 30 years.
11. Languages are amazing. I wish I had the time to learn more and practice speaking them with native speakers.
12. I can't cook very well (and should reevaluate adding the words "very well" in that sentence). I do love to eat different cuisines and try new things.
13. My husband is an AMAZING cook and one of the all-around most talented people on the planet. I am so fortunate to have him as my life partner.
14. I use to train my parrots and parakeets to do silly pet tricks worthy of a spot on the David Letterman segment.

52 Stories: Gladly learning and teaching
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I almost don't need to say where I met storytellers anymore as like with the past few, I also met this one through my book blog. I definitely like her answer to the second question. A woman after my own heart!
Name you'd like to go by: Jen
Age (or age range): Thirtysomething
Gender: Female
Location: Nebraska
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Becoming a mom was the most enlightening, enriching experience for me. From pregnancy, to giving birth, and the first 25 months of her life, every moment has been an adventure. I love to blog about my girl and take pictures. I can't imagine a greater adventure.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I am a thrift store addict, mostly for designer, name-brand clothes. I love to find amazing buys!
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
I'd love to travel to Greece. The food, people, and scenery are so appealing to me. I will go someday!
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
I have two books. :) I would give anyone the book The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. Taking place during Apartheid in South Africa, it is the story of a young boxer that fights for equal rights. That book is so powerful to me, and I love to share it with others. I would also give people a copy of Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover. It is vital for anyone trying to secure their financial future. I recently read it, and it's changed a lot of my thinking.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
As a middle school teacher, I've had kids and parents come back and tell me that I made in difference in their lives. I always try to find the strengths in a child who struggles. I've had a few kids tell me they started to love to read after my class. That makes me really happy, but if someone feels inspired to reach their own goals, whether it involved reading or not, I'm happy.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
The party girl. I went out almost nightly in college and was still able to work, go to school, and write for the newspaper. If I am not asleep by 11, it's because I am writing or watching Frasier or Big Bang Theory reruns. I'd rather be a mom who goes out occasionally than the girl I once was.
What is one thing that you find really funny?
My kids crack me up. My stepson has the sarcastic teenage sense of humor, and my two year-old is constantly saying funny things as she acquires new language. Lately, she loves to sing anything and everything on the radio, from "Call Me Maybe" to "Thrift Shop" (Uh-oh!)
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I love my ambition. I didn't always like it, but now I feel like I am ready to reach my goals and move ahead! If I could get myself a gift, it'd be an airplane. I love the travel and so does my husband, so it'd be great to fly wherever, whenever!
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
We have some similarities with King of Queens, if Carrie was teacher and not as snarky. I can be a little nasty, but she is downright mean more often than not!
What is something that not many people know about you?
I don't have a lot of secrets, but not everyone knows that my first career path was sales. I've sold coupons door-to-door, cars, and mail-order steaks. I love sales and advertising, but teaching is where my heart is.

52 Stories: A Wild Heart
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
This storyteller posted some comments on my book blog a while back and seemed friendly, so I invited her to participate in 52 Stories. I'm just jealous that she lives in the heart of the country music scene!
Name you'd like to go by: Ashley Schneider
Age: 31
Gender: Female
Location: Nashville, TN
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
Immediately, the concerts I have seen with my dad come to mind. Classic rockers of a different generation who can still put on an amazing show. Watching my dad sing every word to each song preformed by The Who, rocking out in the July heat at a U2 concert, witnessing the lifelong Bruce Springsteen fans lift their fists in unison, as if in a cult, to specific songs and so many more. Being in the moment with him, seeing the lights and feeling the music - you only get a handful of chances to do that and I jump at each and every one.
What is your guilty pleasure?
MTV reality shows. I am probably outside of their target demographic, but I still watch a good number of their shows. Not all of them, though - a girl's gotta have standards.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
Be a diving girl in a diving horse performance - like in Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
Hair powder - makes dirty hair and really dirty hair acceptable. Those Victorian period people were on to something. See, trends really do come back.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
Probably singing a solo in high school, pretty sure a lot of people decided not to sign up for choir after that.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
I'd like to say that I am not nearly as bossy, but I received a text this morning that said "Someone has on their bossy pants today." so....
What is one thing that you find really funny?
When people fall down (unless they're elderly).
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
I like that I am up for anything and will try pretty much anything (legal) once. I love being active and adventurous.
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
The Mindy Project on Fox. Mindy Kaling wrote her character "Mindy" brilliantly. Any woman in her 30s with a successful career, crazy dating life and hilarious friends can relate. She is hysterically funny and so relatable. You are either Mindy or you have a best friend just like her.
What is something that not many people know about you?
I hate opening ziplock bags because if the knuckles on my thumbs touch is gives me the willies.

52 Stories: Southern charm
Inspired by One Hundred Names by Cecelia Ahern, I've decided to ask people some thought provoking questions about themselves, as I feel that everyone has a story to tell. If you're just joining me on this journey today, please check out the previous posts from this series, as well.
I met this storyteller through Facebook when she started posting on my book blog group a lot. We e-mail back and forth about Jodi Picoult and Nicholas Sparks books. She's very nice and I hope you will enjoy getting to know her.
Name: April Vaughn
Age: 28
Gender: Female
Location: Lafayette, GA
What is an experience that is legendary for you?
When I graduated at Lafayette High School in 2004.
What is your guilty pleasure?
You may think that this is funny or whatever, but my guilty pleasure is books....I just love to read about other people's stories....because like you said, everybody has a story to tell...and I love books...I don't care who the author is, just as long as there is a good story to remember.
What is something you've never done but you would like to do?
The one thing that I've never done but have always wanted to do was to travel to every city in all of the 50 states...or at least most of them. I've never done it and I'm aware as I think about it right now that it would take alotta gas and alotta money to be able to do that...but that's what I've always wanted to do.
If you could give someone one of your favorite things as a gift, what would it be and why?
It would have to be one of my favorite shirts because of the kind things that they do for me.
What is something you did that changed someone's life?
The thing that I did to change someone's life was when I become friends with a friend of mine for about three years and it really changed her life for the better.
What part of your personality is now extinct?
My personality is extinct now because my I have grown out of my childhood personality and have grown up into a more mature adulthood personality....
What is one thing that you find really funny?
The one thing that I find really funny is when (especially in wedding home videos) someone is dancin' on the dance floor and they're gettin' their groove on and then all of a sudden they lose their balance and then they slip and fall on their asses....to me, that's always funny....it gets me ev'rytime...I laugh so hard that I have tears coming down....LOL!
Tell me one thing you love about yourself (or a gift you'd like to get yourself, where money is not an issue):
The one thing that I love about myself is my fingers (especially when my fingernails are painted a light pink, or even baby blue).
What TV show, book or movie is most like your life?
The TV show that most like my life would have to be One Tree Hill. The book thats most like my life would have to be The Moon and More by Sarah Dessen. The movie that is most like me would have to be Hope Floats.
What is something that not many people know about you?
The thing that most people don't know about me is that I'm afraid of the dark and that I can't see good in the dark.
I met this storyteller through Facebook when she started posting on my book blog group a lot. We e-mail back and forth about Jodi Picoult and Nicholas Sparks books. She's very nice and I hope you will enjoy getting to know her.
